Math Symbols

Maths is a subject which gives life to some people whereas some people get goose bumps at the very mention of the name of the subject. Symbols are graphical icons and math symbols can be exactly termed as the keys which are located on PC keyboards. The math symbols have always been used for the purpose of expressing any mathematical statement in that of a plain language. Each math symbols either represent instructions or statements. Some of the pioneers of math symbols were Christian Kramp, Samuel Reyher, Willian Oughtred, James Gregory, Isaac Barrow, Roman Emperor Augustus, Johann Heinrich Rahn, Thomas Harriot, Pierre Bouguer and many others.

It is a long known fact that the Egyptians were the first civilization who made use of scientific arts. The introduction of the first ever symbol was made by the Egyptians and that was a decimal system which made use of seven different symbols. Although it is not known as to where they reached in their mathematical conclusions but it is often considered that they had a very good understanding of the subject and understood its implications in a brilliant manner. The math symbols used by that of the Egyptians was 1 which was shown by a single stroke, 10 by that of drawing a hobble for cattle, 100 by that of a coil of rope, 1000 by that of a lotus plant, 10,000 indicated by that of a finger, 100,000 by that of a frog or tadpole, and the Figure of God with his arms raised over the head was used to represent 1,000,000. The conventions that were used for that of writing different numbers and symbols were also very much simple.

The mathematics system of the Chinese also makes use of a base-ten system which employs the use of nine numericals and also some additional math symbols used for the purpose of placed-value components of that of the powers of ten. The first round symbol for zero was also introduced in a document dated from the era of 1247.

The most common math symbols used in the contemporary times are (+), (-), (/), (*), (%), (.) and (=). Then there is also the summation sign, integration symbol, and others such as double integral sign, triple integral sign, line integral sign, surface integral sign, cross product sign, product sign, carat sign, square root and surd symbols, slash and continuation signs, colon, parentheses ( ), square brackets [ ], hybrid brackets ( ]/ [ ), curly brackets { }, proportionality sign, similarity sign, approximate equal sign, inequality sign, absolute value sign, increment sign, perpendicularity sign, angle symbol, parallel symbol, logical equivalence symbol, proper subset symbol, subset symbol, union symbol, intersection symbol, correlation, regression, standard deviation, sigma, alpha, beta, gamma, degree, null, degree symbol and many others.

The earliest use of the math symbols can be traced back to thousands of years ago. These were used in the representation of various factors such as operation, grouping, fractions, relations, constants, variables, functions, trigonometry, geometry, matrices and vectors, statistics and probability, trigonometry, calculus, notation, logic and number theory. There are a huge number of math symbols which can be made use of in the mathematics mode. All of the math symbols can be used by typing in order a control sequence which is appropriate. The math symbols can be classified into many categories such as miscellaneous symbols, large operators, binary operators, relations, negated relations, arrows, openings, closings and alternative names. To sum up the Math symbols would continue to be the base of the subject as long as its implications are intact.
